Who’s your favourite book character and why?
Bear Grylls is one of my favourite book characters because he is resilient and he succeeds everything that gets in his way such as sharks, venomous snakes, tigers and wolves. He is professional adventurer, parkourist and much more. His full name is Edward Michael "Bear" Grylls and he was born on 7 June 1974 in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland.

Haast Eagle

The Haast eagle was one bloodthirsty, 18 kg eagle that mainly hunted the Moa. Its wingspan of 3 metres made it a deadly predator. Its wingspan was 1 metre longer than the bald eagle, that roams the earth today. Its talons powerful enough to crush bones with one blow, and it stands nearly 1 metre high.

Term 3 Koru Art

Goal: Create an artist inspired art (Raewyn Harris).

During this art I learnt that chalk is really hard to draw with because...
  • The chalk is really thick
  • The chalk always snaps
  • The chalk has to be thick enough for the black dye to soak into
Also the dye can go into the crayon if you don't press hard enough

Next Steps...

Now this art will be made in to a calendar- Yay!

Music Anti-bullying Rap

WALT: Compose and create a rap (with beat if possible) about bullying.

First we had to make lots of rhyming couplets. Then we used some of those words to make an anti-bullying rap. Here is our rap.

I have to go to school
I have no choice
But the bullies are mean
I always hear their voice

They shout at me
Push me down
Shove me in the pool
Try make me drown

No-one helps me
I tremble in fear
I have no friends
And I’m always scared

Now it’s the last verse
Where the bullying ends
Gonna get back up
The friendship mends

Math Learning Term 2/3

WALT:  Solve 3 digit times 3 digit using algorithm.

I have learnt how to use this strategy fast and easily.

My next step is to solve 5 digit to 10 digit problems.

I also learnt how to do this using decimal numbers.

Moment in time writing

WALT: Write a 'moment in time piece' of writing.

The tentacles that had not bubbled up to the surface for millennia, rose from the deep dark caverns.

I heard towers tumbling and cars crashing as I watched my beautiful house being torn apart with misery. Was this really the end? I heard sirens blazing. The police had come. But were they going to be any use against the gigantic creature?

I looked straight at the Kraken. I looked straight back at me. A shiver went down my spine.  It was bigger than anything that I had ever seen in my life. It had massive grey tentacles and two bulky, red, glowing eyes of evil. I feared this was the end. Maybe I’m dreaming?

I smelt the vile stench or the gooey slime as it spread across the once beautiful city. The smell is so bad that I could hardly breath.

I tasted the gooey slime. It tasted like…… hmmm? Maybe rotten eggs, but ten times worse? It was like the world was going down in a matter of seconds.

I felt like one of the tall towers were going to fall on me. The wind brushed past my little ear. Could this be the last time I ever felt the wind?

I woke up on my bedroom floor. My heart pounded like thunder. My brain was sore and I was extremely confused. Maybe it was a nightmare?

I opened the curtains and there it was.

The Problem with Plastic

WALT use reference books/tools. WALT  use appropriate skills and technologies to find and use a range of texts for specific purposes   (assessment task)

Possible resources:
Plastic Fantastic SJ 2007:3:3

You may be able to find others to help you complete your research.

You can present your learning on a google doc (this one) or a presentation. PLEASE link your presentation onto this document.

What do you need to research?
The big question: WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH PLASTIC?

You should find information about these questions?

What is plastic?
Plastic is a material that is made from petrochemicals.

     2. Why is it a problem for the environment?
Plastic is a problem for the environment because it is ruining our seas, oceans, beaches, forests, cities and wildlife and if wildlife from the sea or land die we won’t have as much food. Also plastic is put into the landfill but there is too much plastic and it takes a very long time to break down so it is taking up more and more space.

     3. What facts can you find about the amount of plastic we use, how it is made, how it breaks down?
We use a lot of plastic every day e.g  chip packets, plastic bottles.
An average American person throws out about 84 kgs of plastic per year.
It takes about 450 years to break down.
Plastic is mostly made from petrochemicals.
Plastic can be made into any shape.

4.What can you do to help?
Buy bulk packs instead of small chip packets, use containers, use reusable bags instead of plastic bags and use drink bottles instead of plastic bottles. Try to reduce rubbish.
   5.  Create a glossary of at least 5 technical words used in your research.
  • microbead   A small particle of plastic, usually between 0.05 millimeters and 5 millimeters in size (or one hundredth of an inch to about two tenths of an inch). These particles can be found in exfoliating face wash, but can also take the form of fibers shed from clothing.
  • plastiglomerate   A name some scientists have proposed for a category of rock created when plastic melts and fuses with chunks of stone, shell or other materials to create a long-lasting record of human pollution.
  • polyethylene  A plastic made from chemicals that have been refined (produced from) crude oil and/or natural gas. The most common plastic in the world, it is flexible and tough. It also can resist radiation.
  • zooplankton   Small organisms that drift in the sea. Zooplankton are tiny animals that eat other plankton. They also serve as an important food source for other marine creatures.
  • pollutant   A substance that taints something — such as the air, water, our bodies or products. Some pollutants are chemicals, such as pesticides. Others may be radiation, including excess heat or light. Even weeds and other invasive species can be considered a type of biological pollution.
  • oceanography  The branch of science that deals with the physical and biological properties and phenomena of the oceans. People who work in this field are known as oceanographers.

7. Create a bibliography of resources you have used to present your answers to this question.
